Scout scholarships for college from past scouting achievements are made available for those students who are active participants in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. From Eagle Scout Scholarships to Girl Scout scholarships, Sea Scout scholarships and Venturing Scholarships, there are many opportunities available that can assist with financial assistance for college.
While many college-bound students may think that the only source for Scouting scholarships is the Boy Scouts of America or Girl Scouts of America programs, scholarships for Scouts can actually come from a variety of different sources. For instance, there are numerous religious Scout scholarships that are available active Scout participants. Resources for such scouting scholarships include the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Distinguished Scout Scholarships, which is available for Catholic high school seniors who are active in Scouting. Other religious Scouting scholarships are offered by the National Jewish Committee on Scouting and the Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting.
There are also numerous college scholarships for Girl Scouts, particularly those who have earned their Silver or Gold Award. One of these girl Scout scholarships is the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, a scholarship program that honors young leaders who make a difference through leadership in public service.
The Youth Exchange Scholarship Opportunities awards, which is sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is another great scholarship for Girl Scouts. Although this program is not restricted solely to applicants who are Girl Scouts, girls involved in Scouting do have an excellent chance at being selected for this program, which offers recipients the chance to travel abroad for several weeks as part of an exchange program. Graduating seniors who have earned the Gold Award should also apply for the Sara and Lawrence Phillips Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarship.
Many clubs and organizations are also excellent sources for Scout scholarships, including the VFW and the Elks Club. The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution also offer excellent scholarship opportunities for Scouts. These clubs are often a good source for scouting scholarships for college due to the fact that scholarships offered are often based on leadership qualities; something which Scouts excel in. Scouts should also consider applying for any other all leadership-based scholarship programs, as they will frequently be a good fit for these scholarship programs.
Minority scouts also have excellent opportunities for scholarships available to them as well. Scholarship opportunities for minority Scouts include the Presidential Freedom Scholarships, the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, the William Randolph Hearts Endowed Scholarship for Minority Students, Microsoft New Science and Technology Scholarships for Hispanic Students, Actuarial Scholarships for Underrepresented Students, the Salvadoran-American Leadership & Educational Fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Graduate Fellowships for Minorities Nationwide.
One great scholarship opportunity for Scouts is the GE-Regan Foundation Scholarship Program. This program was specifically established for the purpose of honoring the character and Legacy of President Ronald Regan by offering financial assistance to applicants who demonstrate citizenship, leadership and integrity. Each year, about 20 students are selected to receive a scholarship worth $10,000. These alternative Scout scholarships are renewable for up to four years, for a total of $40,000.
There are also numerous scholarships for Scouts that are sponsored annually by corporations, foundations, colleges and universities. Scouts who plan to attend specific universities or colleges should consider contacting those schools and ask about specific Scout college scholarships that may be offered to Scouts. Some schools do offer funding streams that are set aside specifically for Scouts.
Scouting provides a wealth of skills and the opportunity to develop and demonstrate leadership, while also taking advantage of the opportunity to achieve awards such as the Eagle Scout Award and the Gold Award. Due to the past achievements of Scouts and the focus on leadership and citizenship which Scouting provides, there are numerous leadership based scholarships available to students involved in Scouting. By applying for specific scouting scholarships as well as alternative Scout scholarships, college-bound students can maximize their college funding opportunities.
